Personally, it all depends on how long I plan on using a particular lure. If I'm am trying to get a feel for what the fish are biting on I'll tie on a swivel. This way I get to try a few different lures without having to waste too much time. However, once I've found a lure that is getting hit consistently I might tie it on directly. I find that I have a lot less chance of losing a large fish if I tie the lure on directly. There is nothing more frustrating that losing a large fish and finding out that the swivel coming undone was the cause.
