Richie talks about talking kids fishing and the advantages of Lake Lavon over Lake Fork. Take a Kid Fishing Fishing is a sport that everyone can enjoy. Most people will decide whether they like fishing or not as a young child. If the experience is positive, they will most likely enjoy it (and vice-versa). Fishing can be a dirty sport or a clean sport, depending on how it is done. You can fish out of a boat with artificial lures and wear your best clothing and go straight to church afterwards. Likewise, you can walk a muddy creek and use stink bait to catch some slimy catfish. Then you get yourself, your truck, your home, and everything else filthy. Some kids will love it, but there is usually someone in the family who won't. I recommend taking children out in a boat with someone who knows how and where to catch the fish. If you go with a guide and catch lots of fish, the kid will remember it and may decide to get into fishing instead of trouble when he/she gets older. I have been fishing Lake Lavon since I was a kid. I have been a professional guide on Lake Fork since 1990 and now have decided to guide on Lavon also. Since I usually boat at least 25 fish, I decided to promote taking kids fishing. I recommend going from May-June or Sep-Oct if you can. White bass consistently feed early in the mornings and are easier to find in those months. I recommend taking kids to Lake Fork from July through September. There, the black bass school up good in the late afternoons. Lake Lavon has the following advantages over Lake Fork. 1) It is closer to Dallas. 2) It is easier to catch lots of fish in a short time (Lake Fork doesn't have white bass). 3) You can keep 50 white bass in a day. 4) Most kids will enjoy it. I do provide all rods and tackle and guarantee fish on full-day trips. A full day is from 6:00AM until 4:00PM. Half days last from 6:00AM until 11:00AM or 4:00PM to 9:00PM. If we catch a limit (50 white bass) on a full-day, we will keep them alive in the live well and release fish the rest of the trip. All largemouth bass will be released on Lake Lavon. If you fish Lake Fork, bass under 16 inches can be kept. My boat will accommodate 2 adults or 1 adult and 2 small children (excluding me). From December through April I don't fish Lake Lavon much. Those months I will be mainly guiding on Lake Fork, Lake Monticello, and Lake Welsh. If you are interested in booking a trip on Lake Lavon, call me at (903) 439-2266 or email me at Be sure to mention Lake Lavon, because I mainly guide on Lake Fork. Richie White |
