This page talks about the definations of different types of live bait that a bass angler can use. Live Bait Defined As any fisherman will tell you the more you learn about fish behavior, the better you will be when trying to choose the best bait for different situations. The reason for this is that there are several different types of live bait that a fisherman has at his disposal. We have put together a high level review of the most popular natural bait. Some of the best baits for freshwater fishing include worms, minnows, crickets and grasshoppers. Please remember to check your local fishing regulations to make sure the live bait you choose is legal for the lake or pond you are fishing. Worms As any fisherman from novice to the pro angler knows, worms are good bait for nearly all types’ freshwater fish. The best place to get this type of bait is in your garden or from a shaded, damp area. If you are unsuccessful in finding them there, worms can always be purchased in fishing tackle stores and bait shops. If you decide to use worms during a fishing trip, thread the hook through the side of the worm at several places along its body. For bait-stealing fish such as sunfish, thread the worm on the hook until the hook is completely covered. Minnows Minnows are small fish that are used to entice some pretty large trophy fish. However unlike worms they are a bit harder to contain. If you decide to use minnows always store them in a minnow bucket with plenty of cool water to keep them alive. Also never crowd them or you will not have any more live bait. If you decide to use minnows during a fishing trip, hook a minnow is through both lips, beginning with the bottom lip. You can also hook a minnow through the tail, behind the head, or through the back. Crickets and Grasshoppers Crickets and Grasshoppers are also some of the most common insects used for bait. However it should be noted that both land and water insects can be used as most fish will not discriminate. If you decide to use a small type of insect while fishing, you should use hooks made of thin wire so you do not crush the insect or have it fall off. |
