Lures Defined
We give the highlights of the different types of lures which can be used by bass anglers.

Lures

As any person knows as they walk through their local tackle store, there are a lot of different types of lures that are sold. Each type promises the same result, the increased ability to catch fish. However all lures were not created equal nor should they be used universally. As in life there are reasons why manufactures have created different types of lures.

Poppers and Flies

Poppers and flies are small lures that are usually used with lighter set ups. They are a staple in both spin cast and fly-fishing as they are light, maneuverable, and fit the attributes of the rod. These baits are very good for panfish and other fish that feed on the surface such as trout and bass. It should be noted that most of the fish that are attracted to this type of lure are smaller.

Spinnerbaits

Spinnerbaits are lures with one or more blades that spin around a "safety pin"-type shaft. Most spinnerbaits have skirts made from animal hair, vinyl, rubber, or other materials. Spinners

Spinners have one or more blades that spin, or revolve, around a straight wire shaft. Some spinners have tails made of soft plastic or animal hair.

Jigs

Jigs have weighted metal heads and a "tail" made of animal hair, soft plastic, feathers, or rubber. Anglers sometimes add a minnow or piece of pork rind to the jig's hook. Jigs can be used to catch nearly every kind of freshwater and many saltwater fish.

Spoons

Spoons are metal lures designed to look like a swimming baitfish. Many spoons are made to be cast. Others are meant to be trolled behind a moving boat.

Plastic Baits

Soft-plastic worms, minnows, and crayfish are available in many sizes and colors and are some of the most popular lures on the market today. The reason for this is that they can be used in a variety of situations for a variety of fish. In addition a fisherman can use this type of lure with or without a weight. In some instances, plastic baits have scents attractive to fish built into them.
