This page talks about the different types of spinning reels.
Spinning Reels Another valuable aspect of a bass setup is the type of reel they have on the pole. The reel is invaluable to any bass fisherman since it gives the bass fisherman the control when reeling in a fish or creating the speed and characteristic of the lure as it is gliding though the water. Since reels can be very expensive, many companies will tell you that there are differences in the overall functionality of their reel over the competition. However though review of reels, study of reel diagrams, and practice, this is not the case. Spinning reels all have the same functionality regardless of size or manufacturer. The only reason why there are different size reels is to give the bass fisherman options on picking the size of their lines. Follow the link, for further information on different sizes of lines. Even though the functionality is not different, there are groups of spinning reels. The reason for this is group of reel can handle different pound-test. Below are the groups of spinning reels. 1) Mini-Systems: These types of reels are the newest and one of the tiniest types of spinning reels. These types of reels are mainly used for smaller fish because it can turn catching a small fish into a harder, but fun process. Many bass fishermen use this type of reel when they are going for bass. Some people may not think that this is a good idea, but these reels have the advantage of being able to present smaller lures like rooster tails or jigs when the bass are not biting on larger tackle. When purchasing keep in mind that some of these reels come with special mounts and need to be used only with a certain type of rod. There are mini-reels that can be purchased which can be used on a variety of different rods also. Finally if using this type of reel, a bass fisherman should set it up with lines up to 6 pound-test, No Higher! 2) Ultra Light: As the name implies these reels are not very heavy and were in fact the lightest types of reels before the mini-systems were invented. An ultra light also shares some of the same characteristics especially the ability to use smaller lures. If you decide to use this type of reel bear in mind there is an approximate capacity of 200yds of 6 pound-test. 3) Standard: These reels are the most popular type with bass fishing due to the capacity of line that the reel is able to function with. These reels are considered “light” and have an approximate capacity of 200 yards of 10 pound-test line. The strength of this type of reel is a bass fisherman can use lines from 6 to 12 pound test without any major difficulty. 4) Intermediate: This is the most popular type of spinning reel when coastal fishing and when fishing for large bass. Most bass fisherman elect to use this type of reel if they believe that they will need up to 15 pound test line and need to cast in the vicinity of 250 yards. For most bass fisherman, this reel is too cumbersome and does not offer enough advantages over a standard reel. |
