We talk about the most popular places to fish and give some tips on what you should do if you decide to fish them. Places to fish One of the best things about fishing is that it is accessible to anyone. Depending on your setup, location, and gear, a fisherman can pretty much fish in any area that surrounds water. We have compiled some of the most popular areas that most anglers frequent such as the shore, lakes and ponds, rivers and streams, and bridges and walkways. Fishing from Shore For most anglers some of their earliest experiences fishing were from the shore of a local lake or pond in their community. Even to this day many casual fishermen who do not own a boat or who just want to get a few casts in, fish from the shore. Although there are some species of fish whose habitat is located in the more central part of the water, there are still plenty of species available to our shore anglers. Some of the more popular fish which are commonly caught by shore anglers include bass, northern pike, sunfish, and stream trout which make their habitat near structure. In addition, fish such as carp, catfish, perch and walleye can be caught by the shore angler as these species feed off the bottom of the body of water. The best part about shore fishing is that it offers many opportunities for anglers. An angler can fish many different types of areas including banks of rivers and streams, the shorelines of inland lakes and ponds. You can also fish from manmade structures such as piers, jetties, walkways. Lakes and Ponds Lakes and ponds are the most common fished areas by bass fishermen as they offer the best habitats for bass and other bait fish. The reason for this is they provide structure such as docks, logs, stump fields, brush and rock piles. These are the key attributes which provide shelter, shade, and protection for fish. With this in mind lakes and ponds are ideal fishing spots for the casual fisherman to the true enthusiast. If you decide to fish a spot always remember the best locations are usually in the remote sections of the water as well as far from roads and other civilization. Rivers and Streams Like lakes and ponds, rivers and streams are also good places to fish since they provide different types of structure such as islands, sand bars, rocks or rock piles, and log jams. These structures are usually within casting distance of shore which increases the likelihood of an angler catching a fish. When anglers fish shallow sections of rivers and streams they also try to get into the action by combining normal shore fishing with shallow water wading. When an angler has the ability to fish from the middle of a stream or river, it increases the ability to reach structure that would be too remote from shore. If you decide to fish this type of water always keep in mind most fish face the flow of water and wait for food to come to them so cast accordingly. Bridges and Walkways Walkways are usually specially built fishing platforms which are near or parallel to bridges, piers, shoreline bulkheads, or any raised structure. A good example of a walkway is a platform which is constructed under a bridge which gives an angler their own space. The reason that walkways are favored over a bridge is they keep anglers safe from auto traffic and puts them closer to the water. Furthermore, fishing from bridges is usually not permitted in many communities, because of the increased danger from traffic. Always remember when fishing from either a bridge or a walkway to be careful and watch out for automobile traffic! |
