Does Size Matter As we know the age old question is does size really matter? Even though it is a point of contention for most people, the same argument is used by anglers when talking about bass fishing. Some anglers will tell you the bigger the bait, the increased quantity and the bigger the fish. The logic behind this statement is if a predator is hungry it would rather down a larger meal than spend precious time and energy chasing minnows. However the people who believe that smaller setups work better argue that hunger is not the only thing that triggers a bass to strike. The other triggers include territory, aggression, anger, and dominance factor in as well. In order to shed some light to my fellow fishermen, I decided to try to test this one day I went out. My “study” took place in a weedy 20 acre lake that I have had very good luck in catching Largemouth bass. Based on my fish finder this lake contained a large size variety of species which ranged from 3 inches up to over 24 inches. Throughout the day I used 2", 5", and 7" Rapalas. At the end of the day, I found the length of bass caught on the smaller lure averaged about 8 inches and increased to over 12 inches with the 7" Rapala. Furthermore I found out that with the smaller size Rapalas, I had a significantly higher catch rate than the larger one. So who is the victor, the large lure with the larger bass or the smaller lure with the increased action? I would have to say that it depends on what your purpose of the day is. If you want that trophy bass to show up your buddy, the large lure offers you the better opportunity to get the big one. However if you think quantity is better than quality, a small lure setup is right for you. Whatever the choice, there is one absolute, this discussion will be happening for years to come!
