which deals with fishing in heavy vegitation. If you have some fishing knowledge that you would like to share, fell free to email us at the address above and we will include this on the site. As we all know the best areas to fish for bass are usually the toughest. In these areas, each cast a bass angler has to contend with dense surface vegetation such as lily pads and hydrilla that are ready to swallow your lure in their maze of greenery. If you do not have a good set up you will find it out quickly and the trophy bass that lurks below you will forever be the one that go away. The biggest problem when fishing a body of water which has acres upon acres of surface vegetation is not the vegetation itself, but being able to weed out the parts that are not going to be productive. The reason for this is you need to focus your efforts on the spots which hold the highest amount of bass as the peak time to fish are short can cannot be wasted. You are probably reading this thinking to yourself, easier said than done. However, when I am in these heavily dense areas I begin to probe the depths with a spinner bait or crank bait. The reason for this is tackle such as jigs, worms, and tubes require too much of a methodical presentation, which can be difficult to accomplish when you are on such a short timeline. On the first couple of casts, I usually try to keep my setup up on top of the water in order to cover the greatest distance in the water. Usually on these casts, my I will use weed less spoons or top frogs as they cover a lot of territory in a short time. Since I have the ability to cover a lot of water, I usually don’t worry if I catch any on these initial passes as I am just tyring to get an idea of what I am facing. At this point a missed strike is a tell tale sign that I am in the right area. Once I have an indication that I am in a good place I get set up with a tube worm and go to town. As not everyone has a great amount of successful experiences with fishing in these densely vegetated areas, I have compiled some bullet points to keep in mind when you are in this type of area; 1) Always work the edges 2) Go over the top of the vegetation 3) Punch it in I hope these quick pointers help you out, but always remember it takes a lot of time and effort to become successful in heavily vegetated areas. However once you become the master of these areas, it seems the trophy bass are endless. Lunker Man |
