What to Do When Looking for a Guide
Tritonmaster gives us some pointers on how to navigate the waters when selecting a bass guide. If you have some tips like these, good fishing stories, or anything else you think bass anglers would enjoy, email us at and we will post it up to the site.

What to Do When Looking for a Guide

As a bass fisherman for many years, I have used professional guides to get to those hard to reach places where the true lunkers live. I have found that finding and hiring the right fishing guide is not always the easiest. In the new internet age any angler can dial up a guide’s website and see pictures of large bass which were caught with the respective guide. Alls you need to do is take out the credit card. However bass anglers do not know what they are buying until you actually are out on the water.

The first step to finding the guides which will lead you to the lunker bass is to know what actually makes a guide good. Through my experience outstanding guides are the ones who are like a Swiss army knife, a jack of all trades. These people use high quality equipment, have logged countless hours on their target water, and are very patient but will give that extra effort. In essence they make sure that you are not just going out for a boat ride on a lake. From the beginning these guides do everything they can to ensure your trip is a memorable and successful one.

Well I have probably stated the obvious in the previous paragraph, so you are probably asking how I find these guides. To begin your search I would recommend the good old world wide web. However as you review these websites, make sure you do not rely on it too heavily in your final decision. Keep in mind that anyone with a keen sense around computers can doctor up pictures. From my personal experience some of the best guides I have used do know their way around a key board, let alone a web browser!

So now where does that lead us? The most valuable tool online is internet message boards and chat rooms. These places are where both happy and frustrated customers can really vent. To find these message boards / chat rooms check out Yahoo or Google groups. When on these boards a post requesting guide suggestions should leave you with enough messages to make a good decision.

Once you have a few leads, I would recommend giving each one of the guides a call. The best way to know if your suspicions and research is right is to have a good old fashioned conversation about every aspect of fishing. In your conversation, I would recommend talking about your style of fishing as not all guides fish the same which could lead to disappointing results on the water. Furthermore a discussion of equipment such as the outboard, gear, and boat will lessen any surprises.

After taking these steps you should be able to make a decision on what type of guide you want taking you out on the water.
