How Much Should You Tip a Guide

How Much Should You Tip a Guide

You have just finished one of the best days of fishing in your life. The camera you brought with you to capture your catches was full by mid-morning. You learned more about fishing during the day than during the past 3 years. Now comes to one of the questions that all people have as the day draws to a close and the boat is almost on shore. How much do I tip?

When deciding how much to tip, you need to think about your whole fishing experience in the same way you think about a waitress / waiter when you are filling out the bill at a restaurant. The amount of fish you caught like a good entre is a plus, but what the guide / waiter really can affect is the experience. Was the guide attentive to you? Did he set you up to have the best day of fishing? As you go through your thought process remember you are tipping based on the guides effort, attitude, service, hospitality, and knowledge not only on the fish you caught, but the fish you didn’t.

Regardless I believe you should still do your best to tip the guide at least in the 15 – 20 percent range. If you favor giving a gift, stick to something that is memorable that the guide would not normally purchase every day. Guides often receive non-cash tips such as steaks, bottles of wine, hats / clothing, etc. The guides that I have talked to are always excited to receive these gifts as they are things they would never usually go out and purchase themselves.

Hope this helps clear you mind on this topic so you can focus your mind on how many fish you caught!
